Song 95- Passings

31 Dec

It’s the last day of the year. Let’s end it solemnly with a look back at some of the musicians we lost in 2006. This is in no way a full list:

Lou Rawls
Wilson Pickett
Gene McFadden
Bill Cowsill
Buck Owens
Gene Pitney
June Pointer
Proof (of D12)
Desmond Dekker
Billy Preston
Syd Barrett
Jesse Pintado (of Napalm Death)
Lou “Boulder” Richards (of Hatebreed)
Boz Burrell (of King Crimson)
Freddy Fender
Sandy West (of the Runaways)
Gerald Levert
Mariska Veres (of Shocking Blue)
James Brown

and we also lost drummer Bruce Gary. So I’m going to end the year with song he was best known for. Despite working with the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Jack Bruce and many others, he’ll always be known for the driving beat behind Song 95- “My Sharona” by the Knack

Song 94- How high does a brother have to climb to touch the light?

30 Dec

Yesterday’s 10kdays was hampered by technical difficulties, but the computer is back up and running and I’m here to talk more about 2006. Last post, I talked about a band that broke up in 2006- Cold. This time, I wanna talk about a reunited band, The Afghan Whigs.

Greg Dulli has been running around for years as a part of the Twilight Singers but in 2006, he announced that he will be returning to the studio to record at least two new songs with his old band, the Afghan Whigs. The two songs will be part of a new retrospective called Unbreakable. It may only be two songs but the door is still wide open for more. (Note- Dulli isn’t leaving Twilight. They’re about to go on tour with some help from Mark Lanegan)

It may be 2 songs so far but it’s still awesome because few bands can rock like Afghan Whigs. Case in point- Song 94- “Honky’s Ladder” by the Afghan Whigs

The video for this song isn’t on youTube and that’s a travesty. But you can find it here. Do so, it’s worth it! http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/afghan_whigs/videos.jhtml
One of the best songs ever with it’s slick vocals and killer slide guitars.

And don’t forget to check out the other 10kdays journals! Glenn! Rachael! Andy! Heuristics Inc! Hoffie! Troy! Tha Pooch! and prayformojo! Not as sexy as the Afghan Whigs but they try.

Song 93- End of a soundtrack

28 Dec

Staying in the vein of year in review, quite a few bands bit the dust this year. Sadly, this included one of my faves, Cold.

After 10 years, Cold has decided to call it quits. Cold has always been a band that has sat in the fringe of other things I enjoy. For instance, I am a big wrestling fan. When WWE did Tough Enough on MTV, Cold did the song for when someone got eliminated (“Gone Away”). I love video games and when it came to playing Jet Grind Radio on the Dreamcast, my #1 song to use was “Just Got Wicked”. So hearing they broke up saddens me greatly. I feel like I’ve lost my personal soundtrack.

Here’s one of my favorite Cold songs- Song 93- “Stupid Girl” by Cold.

Song 92- RIP Godfather of Soul

27 Dec

I’m back from my holiday vacation and of course, I’m going to talk about the passing of James Brown.

I hits me pretty hard because this year was my biggest year ever for listening to James Brown, especially my song choice for today- Song 92- “Super Bad” by James Brown. But instead of just talking about how great James was, I’m gonna let you see for yourself in a way that not a lot of people have. A few years back BMW made a set of short films called The Hire. They starred Clive Owen as “the Driver” and featured BMW cars and excellent directors. One of the short films was called Beat The Devil. It was directed by Tony Scott and starred Owen, Gary Oldman, Marilyn Manson & James Brown. How cool is that!

I hope around the world singers are collapsing on stage, getting helped off stage and then coming back super bad. James would want it that way.

Post 91- Look it’s after midnight, so it counts!

Time for #1!

Song 91 aka my #1 song of 2006)- “Heart in a Cage” by The Strokes

I’m shocked that a song from the Strokes is my number one. As being a former New Yorker, now New Jerseyian who spends a ton of time in New York, I have been inundated with years of Strokes hype. So when “First Impressions of Earth” came out, I didn’t give a damn. “Juicebox” came out and it sparked a little interest with it’s great bass line and it’s provocative video. But still it was the Strokes. They had left me down way too many times with the previous album. (“12:51” blah.) Then they released “Heart in a Cage” and I was blown away. Nick Valensi’s guitar work on this song is the best I have ever heard from the band, and the best guitar work I’ve heard all year. Then they got Samuel Bayer to do their video. It was just getting better every minute and now at the end of the year- I still love this song. It was been well deserving of #1. Just listen and bask in the guitar work.

post 90- damn i’m tired

23 Dec

It’s been a long long day of celebrating ther holidays with an all-day trip to the museum. I have no energy after tons of walking around Manhattan. But a day with the family is worth it. But 10k must be appeased.

Song 90 aka my #2 song of 2006)- “Soupy George” by 7 Seconds Of Love

When I choose my top 3, I choose songs with staying power and this tune from the geniuses at rathergood.com has more than lasted the test of time. I walk around singing this all the time. The video still makes me laugh. I’ve gotten to speak to the band on myspace and they were great guys (they contacted me first! and we chatted about New Jersey). All these pluses and no minuses. Behold the wonder of Soupy George.

post 89, the usual end of the year stuff

22 Dec

It’s almost Xmas but I don’t feel like talking about the usual tunes. I already talked about “Oi to the World” which is enough. So I’m going to talk about another end of the year tradition- the favorite songs of the year. Now, I’m hard at work on a list of my favorite tunes from Songfight for the year, so I won’t talk about SF tunes because I don’t want to ruin the surprise. But I will begin talking about my favoriute tunes of the year. So, here’s #3

Song 89 (aka my #3 song of 2006)- “Hello Taxi, Goodbye Sleep” by the 8mm Fuzz

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

It’s not an SF song but it is a songfighter. I was saddened when the Ochmoneks broke up in 2005. But Chris Brown went on to a new band (instead of just sticking with his solo work as The Idiot Kings). In February his new band, the 8mm Fuzz, released “Hello Taxi, Goodbye Sleep” on their myspace and blew me away. I had been listening to She Wants Revenge alot and when I heard this song, I put the SWR away. SWR had been beaten at their own game.

Check out 8mm Fuzz at their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/the8mmfuzz
