One of my favorite 80’s metal bands that I never give enough respect to is Anthrax. Growing up, they were the foundation to the metal stations I listened to. Whether it be songs like “Caught in a Mosh”, “Got the Time” or “Belly of the Beast”, they bought great bass heavy guitar driven rock. And I can’t forget their comedic side with songs like “I’m the Man” or their rap rock pioneering with “Bring Da Noize”. Again, you wonder what this has to do with the football theme? Well, they once wrote a song about the late great John Belushi and his problems with drugs and his eventual death. The song was Song 208- “Efilnikufesin” by Anthrax. The song is also known as N.F.L. because Efilnikufesin is actually Nice Fucking Life backwards and badly spelled. It’s a stretch but that’s the fun of this theme. Woo-hoo.

AFI is the sing along band. When you go to an AFI show, it is helpful to know the words because it’s expected of you to fill in some blanks here and do some call and response. AFI songs are made to sing along too. There’s a lot of spots where there are people singing along with Davey Havok and when it’s a live show, you get to be one of those people. It’s a fun experience. Take a look at Song 207- “Summer Shudder” by AFI and you’ll see what I mean. Oh wait, you ask what this has to do with the football theme? You think I’m just talking about one of my favorite bands and I’ve dropped the theme? Au contraire, mon frere. This song was included on the soundtrack to Madden 2007. Nothing screams out football like AFI, right?

It’s football draft day and I think I’ll do a Football theme. I’m going to start off with Song 206- “The Wreckoning” by Boomkat. I don’t know why I like that band name so much but I do. Anyway, you’re probably wondering what Boomkat has to do with football. Well, Boomkat is known for two things. One is the song “Wasting My Time” which appeared on the soundtrack to the movie “8 Mile”. The other thing they are known for is their lead singer Taryn Manning. Taryn Manning is an actress who can be found in such films as the aforementioned “8 Mile”, “Crazy/Beautiful” and “Hustle & Flow”. Boomkat is Taryn and her brother Kellin, who are cousins to another famous pair of siblings- Peyton and Eli Manning. If you don’t know who those two are then this football theme is not for you.

Okay I’ve been doing 10kdays for over 200 days, let’s see if you can figure out what made me choose today’s song? What about today has led to Song 205- “Natural One” by Folk Implosion.

Give up? Today is National Take Your Daughters and Sons To Work Day. So it’s Take Your Kids To Work Day. And that made me think of the movie Kids. You know that one. The controversial one that came out in the 90’s, directed by Harmony Korrine and featuring Chloe Sevigny and Rosario Dawson. And what was on that soundtrack? Natural One”! Now if all my thought processes could make that much sense.

It’s a first.

This is the first time that I have ever heard a song for the first time and rushed to talk about it in 10kdays. But boy is it deserving. It’s a mash-up by Wax Audio. Wax Audio is quickly becoming one of my favorite mash-up DJ’s with songs like “Whole Lotta Sabbath” which mixed Led Zep & Sabbath, and “Full Metal Jackson” which put Michael Jackson at the helm of Metallica. This time around, the choice of collaboration is top notch. He mixed Bjork’s “Cover Me” with PJ Harvey’s “Down By The Water” with Massive Attack’s “Dissolving Girl” with Tori Amos’ “Silent All These Years”!!!! The result is cold and compelling. It’s awesome. I must go download Wax Audio’s “Mashopolos” album. It’s got a Bollywood mix of Iron Maiden and a mix of AC/DC and Ray Parker Jr.!!!

What made me choose today’s song. No clue. I’m just sitting around chatting with Glenn and for some reason, I still hadn’t eaten dinner and I’m looking around on youtube for a song for today and something screams out—-Madonna. I can admit, I enjoy Madonna. She’s a third of that musical genius trinity with Prince and Michael Jackson who despite what craziness their lives are in or what phase their music is in, you are bound to find something good. And this is one of my favorites of hers. And it’s got the name of a MJ song. But I don’t think Prince has a song by this title, he should do one.

Growing up there was a radio station called WDRE that played lots of new wave and that was the station of my teenhood. And when I first started listening to it, one of the big things was Erasure’s “Wild” album. I have no idea how I ended up liking it. But then again, I was influenced by a lot of music from that station. Well, anyway, I decided that I would include one of my favorites from the album here on 10k and I decided on Star. Then I saw thew video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTTF1wQnmuo and I was appalled at how bad it was. It was almost as bad as the new Tori Amos video “Big Wheel” which thankfully Yahoo pulled from YouTube. WORST VIDEO EVER. So I was appalled and decided today would not be Erasure’s day and I’d choose another song from my DRE listening youth, one with a video I’m willing to watch. Yes, I’m being picky. 😛 But I’m happy that I was picky because I stumbled upon a classic. The video is only somewhat better but the song is such a classic. Thanks for reading my ramblings for today.
