Yesterday, I decided to look at a recent phenomena…The “Hey Ya” cover. “Hey Ya” is a boisterous Outkast song that seemingly everyone thinks they can cover well. The results vary. I spent two hours straight listeing to them. There was JD Natasha’s version with strings, The Drive By Truckers sloppy version, The New Amsterdam’s intentionally sloppy version, Matt Webble’s acoustic version (one of the best), We Operate Man’s version with the incredible voice, The Supersuckers version which captured the energy, Razorlight’s version with the gospel choir, Jason Webley’s accordian version, Motorcade’s alternative rock version, The Mad Lillies’ recording in a reverb filled apartment version, Carrera’s punk version, Dave Corum’s version which is classic Dave, Breakstuff’s slowed down version, Fourth Floor’s french version, Echolocation’s cover of the Weddle cover, and some others. But my favorite was the version by the country band from Germany!

For a long time I have been lamenting the sad state of radio in New York/New Jersey if you are a rock listener. WSOU and G106.3 are good but hard to tune in. We used to have K-Rock but one day it disappeared. What came in its place was Free FM, a talk radio station. The morning show at Free FM was David Lee Roth and it failed miserably, so he was replaced with Opie & Anthony. The rest of the day was filled with odd things like Penn Gillette and on occasion pro-wrestler Tazz. But finally Free FM has met its demise and the rock is back. I found out today quite accidentally and was happy to hear some AFI, White Zombie and Metallica on the radio instead of being stuck with stations that play Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape” all the time. But the sign that told me that it was really back was hearing Song 237- “Used To Love Her” by Guns & Roses. Yeah rock.

Damn, it’s almost midnight. I’m running out of time. I had much more time yesterday. I even had time to do a radio show. I did a second edition of The Other Night I Dreamt Of Knives. And it included this song: Song 236- “Jesus Christ” by Brand New. See it here and then listen to it again on my show! Double the Niv-ivity goodness.

It’s Memorial Day and I’ve got a little time on my hands, how about going on a dig.

Today’s dig will send me through the annals of YouTube. And at first I was bombarded with singer-songwriters with their acoustic guitars plastered 2 feet from the camera. As one myself, just without the camera, I found myself searching for something more. Plus, c’mon if you’re gonna be on YouTube and wanna make some waves- make a damn video. I quickly lost hope until I found a band that actually had a video. Granted, it was mostly a performance video but there was a cameraman that did those crazy angle things like pans and close-ups. So I checked out the band and I was intrigued by the singer’s odd verbal delivery. It was the oddly nasal thing I ever heard. It was stunted and just sounded a weebit like the singer had some mental retardation. Just it was very enthralling to hear after two listens I was sure that it deserved a spot in 10kdays.

Song 235- “Change For You” by The Midway State
Upon further research, I have found that the Midway State is a band on the fringe of much bigger things. They had a song used in an episode of the OC and they’ve opened for other on the fringe bands like Shiny Toy Guns and Theory of a Deadman. No, I didn’t find out about any retardation on the part of lead singer Nathan Ferraro. 🙂

Yesterday was a bad day. Not only did I miss a day of 10kdays but I was sick with a bad migraine and one of my guinea pigs passed on. In honor of the bad times, here’s one of the saddest songs I can think of. On Halloween of 2005, the band Bayside was in a bad car accident. Their drummer “Beatz” Holohan was killed when their tour van hit a patch of ice and flipped over. The first single off the first album of new Bayside material since the crash is the song Song 234- “Duality” by Bayside. It’s extremely personal and lyrically stunning once you know what the band has been through:

Some days
I get crazed
I don’t know why it’s all relevant
I’ll take deep breaths
And keep control, go on.

I’ve tried brave
And you’ve tried to save
I’m proud to keep it bottled up
I think I past my prime and lost my mind and I’m torn.

No telling what tomorrow holds.
Who let, who let this feeling die, when all I did was try?
Who let, you let this feeling die,
I can’t get you out of my head, my head.
You’re the flame that burns me so I know that I’m still alive.

Some say
It’s all fate
but I say we control our lives
And if my destiny should outbest me then that’s fine.
I make believe thrill and apathy co-exist in me fairly equally

The truth is doubts are all I’ve got to call mine.

No telling what tomorrow holds.
No telling what voice takes control.
Who let, who let this feeling die, when all I did was try?
Who let, you let this feeling die,
I can’t get you out of my head, my head.
And you’re the flame that burns me so I know that I’m still alive.

Is there anybody out there (out there)
Is anybody calling (anybody calling)
Woaahh, if what i say is really wrong
Is there anybody out there (out there)
Is anybody calling (anybody calling)
Woooah, if what you say is really wrong.
I’m not in control, I think I’m out of control

Who let, who let this feeling die, when all I did was try?
Who let, you let this feeling die,
I can’t get you out of my head, my head.
And you’re the flame that burns me so I know that I’m still alive.

I’m not feeling very good. Too much time in the sun and a very long day has taken it’s toll. So here’s a short post. I know nothing about the group A Scholar and A Physician and I don’t feel like wikipedia searching right now. All I know is that I heard this song for the first time on Marcus Kellis’ radio show Man Date. It’s a great remix of a classic- the Super Mario Theme. Much to my joyous surprise, there’s a live version on YouTube. Remixed video game tune, live techno on YouTube, all is good. Now I’m going to end this post with the usual accoutrements and then crawl into a hole and die.

Today I embark on a new adventure. Okay, it’s an old adventure reborn. I’m going to do an internet radio show. Last year, I did a show called the X-Tokyo-Radio-Show, hosted by Nataly K, a TTS program. Today I’m going to do a show using my own voice which is a completely different world. It’s in response to the fact that Glenn Case has restarted his internet radio doing as well. If you heard his show, the House of Delusions, I was a weekly guest. Now it’s time for me to branch out on my own and do a show. Wish me luck, folks. And what is my show called? “The Other Night I Dreamt Of Knives”. The name comes from Song 232- “It’s the End of the World as we know it (and I feel fine)” by R.E.M.
