What could be better than a museum devoted to the wonders of Mickey Dees? Lots of stuff. But there’s bound to be a ton of better stuff located in Pennsylvania. Hmmm, do I go for a oldie but goodie like Teddy Pendergrass or The O’Jays? Perhaps I should go 80’s with the Hooters. Maybe 90’s with one of my favorites of the time, Live. Or less known 90’s gems like the Ocean Blue or Jeffrey Gaines. Maybe I should go for the comedic genius of the Bloodhound Gang. Or maybe the rap styles of the Roots. In the end, I’m torn between CKY and Harold Melvin. Two very contrasting group. One is the old soul that I grew up with. The other is the raucous band that was made famous by its Jackass ties. In the end, one has videos on YouTube and one doesn’t.

Today, we hits the Oregon trail and see what music we find. Portland is full of great music so this one is a cinch. There’s so much to choose from… Everclear, perhaps. Or maybe one of my favorite bands to see live, the Thermals. Maybe Rockstar Supernova contestant and sexpot, Storm Large. Maybe phenomenons that I don’t understand, the Decemberists or the Shins. Or maybe a phenomeon I do understand, Elliott Smith. Instead, I choose to go for one of my bandmates. Anti-M, of my band X-Tokyo-River-God is a Stumptown diva with an extraordinary voice. My song for the day is her version of one of her old band Egg Carton Zoo’s songs. It’s exceptional and she also made the video. She’s a super talent.

Welcome to Oooooooooooooklahoma where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain. But it also brings Hinder and Hanson. Ugh. Hopefully there’s some better stuff but Color Me Badd is from there, so I’m not hopeful. Seriously, there are some good bands that come from Oklahoma. I just have to choose. Will I go with metal band The Agony Scene? Perhaps the best band ever to play at the Peach Pit, The Flaming Lips. Maybe “Dirty Little Scret” band The All-American Rejects. Maybe not them. I’m gonna go with one-man band whose making it big (very slowly) Aqueduct. I love his anthem to his youth. It speaks to me and my youth.

Tomorrow, you have died of dysentery!

And here’s this week’s Iram Extra. This is usually where I discuss a song that my buddy Iram choose and Iram & I have discussed. Well, we didn’t discuss it other than the fact that it’s on heavy rotation in her iPOD. It’s a song by Death Cab For Cutie. I like one song from DC4C and this isn’t that one. I know squat about the band except that the name comes from an odd place and I decided to see them at the Siren Festival. So here’s the extra. Maybe you can give me some insight, because Iram didn’t.

Okay, so I’m posting this from the wii. That means that this is gonna be a very barebones post. Altered states brings us to the state where you can’t sell colored animals. Akron, Ohio put that rule in place to discourage festive dyed animal sales of rabbits and baby chicks. Interesting but what about the tunes? There are tons of great bands from Ohio, especially Cleveland and Cincinnati. I’m split between posting about the Afghan Whigs or Nine Inch Nails. Since I’ve posted about my favorite Whigs song (“Honky’s Ladder”), so I’ll pick a NIN song. Mr. Reznor did an awesome Joy Division cover from the Crow soundtrack. I’ll go with that and I’ll post a link and all the accoutrements later.

The idea of so many churches scares the hell out of me. Welcome to North Dakota. And what will we find here to whet our musical whistles? Johnny Lang has good guitar chops but hasn’t ever put together a whole song that I enjoy. Lawrence Welk, Peggy Lee and Bobby Vee were all before my time. Ummm…that seems to be it. Why are some states so devoid of bands that make it big? Well, from what I hear there’s a burgeoning scene there. Maybe one of those bands will break out. For now…I’ll go with the classic Peggy Lee. Hmmm, this ended up a pretty good choice.

Next up, a state where it’s illegal to color baby chickens???

Okay the law that it’s illegal to sing offkey in North Carolina has gotta be bullshit. Firehouse is from NC. That high pitched howl at the end of “Don’t Treat Me Bad”. That should be a life sentence. So what other music will I find here in NC? Tons. There seems to be a big music scene especially around the Triangle (Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham) that produces a lot of rock and punk bands. But honestly the first band that came to mind was Peroxwhy?gen, Pro-wrestler Jeff Hardy’s band. But I can’t say that I like them enough to post a song from them. I think I’ll go with Squirrel Nut Zippers. The band is a lot of fun. Their modern jazz-swing thing is great and there’s a ton more to them than “HELL”.

Next up, the state with the most churches per capita. Oh God.

Being a commuter, I spend almost as much time in my home in NJ as I do at work in the state I grew up in…New York. NY is a musical mecca, so I have trillions of bands to choose from. Seeing as there are soooooooo many choices, I’m just gonna go with the first one that comes to mind- Interpol. I was just on YouTube this afternoon commenting on this video. It’s stirred up a lot of conversation. I think I gave a pretty good interpretation of the video on the page, so you can read that and I can stop blogging til tomorrow. 🙂
