The Songs I Can’t Be Without continues with a song that supercharges the motors. Every once in a while you need something that will boost your energy and there’s nothing like a good song to do that. This song does that for me. It’s a power packed tune all shoved into less than two minutes. The song includes simple catchy hooks, frantic pace and best of all, a psychotic music video. This is my idea of fun. If you’re not afraid of clouds, this video will make ya.

I’m taking an extended break from the Worldrock theme. Why? Not because of a lack of enthusiasm for the theme. The reason is is that my birthday is next Monday. And it’s not just any birthday, it’s the big 30. So I figured, why not have some fun with the whole darn thing. Up until my birthday, the theme is music that I like. I know that seems like everyday. But I’m talking about greatest hits. I’m talking about the #1’s. This is the big time. These are songs that I can live without. And first up, “Baby Got Back”. I joke. I kid. First up, one of my favorite from my teenhood. The band Aztec Camera didn’t really mean much to me. To this day, I don’t really know about them. I had never heard anything from the band before this song and nothing after except some mentions in a Christigau book. But that doesn’t matter because when it comes to songs from my teen years, few resonate more than theirs. The song is “Crying Scene”. The song is built on a strong base of new wave sounds. The guitars are bright, the keys are harmonious. What makes it stand out are the lyrics, especially the chorus. It has always struck a chord. It’s a perspective on life and all it’s drama summed up in six lines and for that I will always love this song.

You only get one hit, that’s the beauty of it,
What’s the good in crying?
It’s always been that way, at the end of the day,
You gotta keep on trying.
Life’s a one take movie and I don’t care what it means,
I’m saving up my tears for the crying scene.

I’m back from my li’l vacation and I feel like I need a vacation after my vacation. So I’m really out of it, so I’m gonna keep this one short and sweet. Everything will be back to normal at 10kdays tomorrow. I’ll probably talk about some Russian rock or something else of the like. Today, I’m too tired for research. Here are some Smiths. Yawn. So sleepy. 4 hours of driving. Yawn… Enjoy the Smiths. I love the Smiths but I’m too tired to talk about them. Someone else sing the praises for me.

The world will have to wait. Or at least the World Rock. I am about to head off to beautiful Conneticut to spend a weekend with my sister-in-law (see AFI posts from last year). There won’t be any wild rock concerts or crazy creepy chinese restaurants but there will be candy apples and good company. So I probably won’t be posting tomorrow (but you never know). As for today, I’m going to stray again from the World Rock and I’m going to post about a band from Minneapolis, MN. The band consists of singer/guitarist Jenna Wilhelm and effects master Mark McGee. Together they are one of the best named bands around- To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie. Their music consists of minimal soundscapes and ethereal sounds used to the maximum effect. It is as haunting and beautiful as it is mesmerizing. Today was my first day delving into the Patron album and its really been a pleasure. It’s been like listening to “In Rainbows” if made by Bjork with a helping hand from Black Tape for a Blue Girl. That’s a very good thing.

German rock music. First thing that comes to my mind is big and angry. I think Rammstein singing “Du Hast” and setting huge fires on stage. I think KMFDM, with songs like “Son of a Gun” and “A Drug Against War”. I think death metal and goth music. Seldom do I think of soft and melodic. Maybe Scorpions “Wind of Change” but there’s not a lot of it that comes to mind. I think that’s a failure of mine. So I began to look around of German music (especially in German, not English) that wasn’t all about the crunch. German can sometimes sound like a gruff language. Can it be made beautiful. Of course, it can. I found some interesting German rock that bordered closer on pop and was nowhere close to bands like Rammstein and Die Arzte. My favorite so far is the band Wir Sind Helden (We are Heroes). How could I not like a song with a title like this? And there’s nothing like a video that pays homage to the classic “Subterranean Homesick Blues”.

World Rock Extra: I may have found something nice in German rock but I still love it angry and crunchy. And it doesn’t get any angrier, louder, more abrasive than digital hardcore band Atari Teenage Riot

Today has been a crazy crazy day full of all sorts of projects. Definitely, world rock has not been on the radar at all. In fact, I barely listened to music today!!! So I’m gonna take a day off from the theme and take a look at what I’ve been listening to lately. Well, I’ve been listening to the new Radiohead. I don’t hear a single from the album but there’s a lot of cool stuff that I can play in the background while I write. Then there’s the Melora Creager album, Perplexions. I don’t understand why it’s not a Rasputina album since Melora is the mastermind behind the group but who cares, the music is great. The song I’ve listened to the most lately (I even heard it twice today in a day where I barely listened to music) is

Song 373- “Thrash Unreal” by Against Me!

I have an immense appreciation for Against Me! because they have the thing that I always look for…energy and conviction in their performances. You listen to this song and the story that Tom Gabel weaves, it’s so strong. But at the same time, it’s extremely catchy. One listen and the hook is embedded in you

“No mother ever dreams that her daughter’ll grow up to be a junkie/ No mother ever dreams that her daughter’ll grow up to sleep alone”
