Quick, tell me five things you know about the country of Mongolia. If you’re like me, you’re probably struggling with the task. So when it came to looking for Mongolian rock, I didn’t know what to expect. I was happy to find that centered around the capital city of Ulaanbataar, there is a rock scene that reminds me a lot of the Korean rock scene in some ways. There’s a bit less of the frantic guitar stuff like I posted about. There’s a lot of the more melodic stuff. When I read the wikipedia entry on Mongolia rock, it talked about heavy metals like Hurd and Nisvanis. They are quite mistaken if they are considering that heavy metal. They are nothing like the heavy metal bands I’ve found elsewhere in the world. The same article calls the band Night Train alternative rock. That’s accurate. In fact, I’d almost call them new wave in their sound. There is definitely a very Western influence there. Funny isn’t it. You may not know a lot about Mongolia but its clear, they know a lot about American and European music. Check out this well crafted tune by Night Train. The strings are a great touch.

Worldrock Extra- Check out this ballad from Mongolian rap-rockers Chono. It’s got prostitutes, drug use and gangs. It might as well be American.
