U. I’ve already talked about Utada and Uverworld in 10kdays, so that leaves me only a few choices. UA is the best of the ones that are left BUT I haven’t got a song from her that I can talk about. So instead of taking a day off, here’s a song from the already spoken about Utada Hikaru.

If you’re a long time reader of 10kdays then you know that I’m a wrestling fan. And one part of wrestling I love is puroresu- Japanese wrestling. There are many different feds in Japan. There’s the legendary two: New Japan and All Japan. There’s NOAH which is you can call the second generation legend group. There are groups like Big Japan which do crazy deathmatch (lightbulbs a plenty!) and groups like Hustle and Dramatic Dream Team who go to crazy extremes when it comes to the entertainment side (go to YouTube and watch a video on Danshoku Dino…I DARE YOU). But I prefer the small speedy guys, the “juniors” and the top federation for that kind of action is Dragon Gate. What does this all have to do with J-Rock. Wrestling and Rock music always go together. There used to be a stable in Dragon Gate called M2K (Mochizuki, Mochizuki and Kanda) and while they ran amok in the federation, they entered to music but famous Japanese rock band Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. TMGE is a guitar heavy rock band with a sizeable American and European following. Their song “GWB” was the perfect song to fuel the fast paced matches of Dragon Gate.

And here’s a Dragongate music video (made by YouTube’s leader in puroresu music videos- Billzerosion) with music from J-rock band Ellegarden.

If I’m going to talk about my love of Japanese Rock, then I can’t pass S without the band that started the obsession- Shonen Knife. I wasn’t hip and underground, so I didn’t get into the band until they got on a major label. And that first album was a reissue of songs from the previous albums. I don’t know why I bought it as a kid another than I heard that it was a band with good guitar work who was made up of three Japanese women. Ever musically gutsy, I guess. I’ll never regret the choice as it proved to be a fun album. It wasn’t a thrashing rock fiasco like the stuff I enjoy now. It had roots in classic rock and pop and was silly fun. Songs like “Insect Collector” and “Tortoise Brand Pot Scrubbing Cleaner’s Theme (Sea Turtle)” were like nothing I had ever heard at the time while songs like “I am a Cat” and “Burning Farm” were downright American. And they continued to pull from those American influences for years to come. Check out their cover of a Monkees classic:

How could you not dig a band with tours named “Pissed Off” and “God of Hell”. That’s the wonderful badass style of The Rodeo Carburettor. They are a straight-up guitar heavy rock band whose sound is fierce. According to wiki, they don’t have any on-stage banter because they are so serious about their music. This band needs to be in the next Guitar Hero. I wanna say more about this one but today has not been one of my better days so I’m going to cut this post short and let the music speak for itself. The only other thing I’ll say about it is that in comparison to some of the other stuff I’ve posted in A-Z J-Rock, it makes some of those songs seem like child’s play.

So, now I’m at Q. Q isn’t a popular letter in English. I can only imagine how it must be in Japanese. Well, there’s one band that I know of. It’s called Quruli. I’ve listened to three songs by the band and sadly, I don’t dig them. So I’m at a loss for Q. So I’m giving up on the letter and playing a completely unrelated to Japan tune. The funny thing is that I have been so immersed in Japanese songs I don’t know where to begin. Hmmm. I know. A Fine Frenzy sounds like the name of a band but it’s just one woman, a dynamic redhead named Allison Sudol. She’s getting a lot of play lately on radio and VH1 for a ballad called “Almost Lover”. I can’t stand that song. Thankfully I didn’t give up on her (I thought she had a great voice but I couldn’t deal with the plotting place of the ballad or the phrase “goodbye, my almost lover”). I gave her a second try and found “Rangers”. It had a Tori Amos feel in the composition but her vocals were full of soul, reminiscent of Sia. It’s a nice mix and makes for a great song. Tomorrow, back to Japan.

Here I am at letter P. And most people would probably expect me to write about the Polysics. If you haven’t gotten on the Polysics bandwagon, they are a Japanese version of Devo, featuring bouncy synths, orange jumpsuits, boxy sunglasses and a li’l girl that borders on way too adorable. But instead I’m going for the band Plastic Tree. No, they aren’t named after the Radiohead song but clearly there is an influence in their sound. This is one of those strange incidents where I have nothing more to say about the band. It’s not like there’s a great story to tell or something extra special about them (that’s why I talked about the more interesting Polysics earlier). The music is just plain good. Take it for what it’s worth.

Woo-hoo. I made it to 400.

Here I am at O and I am kicking myself for having mentioned Orange Range before in 10kdays because their song “Asterisk” is one of my favorite J-Rock songs. So I am left to seek out another O band. The next thought would be the band Onmyouza but I’ve posted about them before back at #269. Well, there’s a band called OCEANLANE, a Japanese band who sing in English and play extremely generic emo. There’s nothing wrong with the band but there’s not that stands out about them either. They might as well be the Ataris. There’s an all-girl ska band called Ore Ska Band. The sound is….ska and the concept of an all girls Japanese ska band is commendable but the music isn’t really postworthy today, though they might be worth another try at a later day. There’s OLIVIA, who’s half Japanese, half American. She has an interesting story and a varying musical style. Too bad, I haven’t found the one that hits me. Luckily, I found Oblivion Dust. Sung in English, Oblivion Dust is a little Orgy, a little Smashing Pumpkins, with a touch of maybe Our Lady Peace. Good stuff.
