One thing we can definitely take from this theme is the understanding that Japanese bands can rock. But this wasn’t always a prevailing belief. There were many who believed that the Japanese could not recreate the American rock sound. One band decided they wanted to prove all the naysayers wrong. They called themselves The Yellow Monkey, which is the equivalent of a black band calling themselves the Watermelon Eaters. They choose their derogatory name as a jab at those who couldn’t see past their being Japanese and take in their music. The Yellow Monkey existed from 1989 to sometime after 2001. In that time, they did songs in Japanese and English and were able to create that sound that some thought was impossible. They evolved with the times, playing styles from American hair metal to J-rock. Anyway you slice it, they were one bad ass rock band.
