A good cover is one that takes a song in a different direction from the original. For instance, I lover when a metal band decides to cover a song that isn’t very metal. And I’m not talking about a cover like Poison doing Loggins and Messina’s “Your Momma Don’t Dance” as they kept very true to the original. I’m talking about a big difference like when Jag Panzer did a cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. One of my co-workers is a big Lightfoot fan. When I play that cover, it’s like a dagger in his heart. Another song in that similar “how did that become metal” vein is a song by Anthrax. They decided to cover a song by Joe Jackson. No, they didn’t cover “Is she really going out with him?”. That would’ve been badass. No, they covered the song “Got The Time”. And I’m willing to bet that most metal fans probably have no clue it’s a remake or have heard the original. Here’s a link to Joe Jackson performing the original which is very Latin in its delivery, Latin meets Talking Heads. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY-rGFog3Oc . Now after hearing that, my question is what inspired Anthrax to rock it out. Stuff like this is why I love covers. They turned that Latin percussion into great bass and drums and the song is actually slower than the original but it works.
