703

5 days of Current Events. That’s the new theme. There’s so much going on in the world that it just asks to be talked about. Take for instance- Musicians Against McCain/Palin. Okay, there’s no such organization but it definitely feels that way. It seems that there a lot of musicians who are vehemently against their music being used by the McCain/Palin campaign. Today, Bon Jovi issued a statement against the use of their song “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” by the Republican Pres/VP candidates. That would make #7! Other musicians who have also taken offense include Survivor, Foo Fighters, Barracuda, Van Halen, Heart and Jackson Browne. Jackson Browne actually so far as to sue the GOP for copyright infringement. Heart’s protest was one of the most scathing:

“Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.”

Foo Fighter’s remark wasn’t as harsh but it also struck a chord:
“This isn’t the first time the McCain campaign has used a song without making any attempt to get approval or permission from the artist. It’s frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that ‘My Hero’ was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song. We hope that the McCain campaign will do the right thing and stop using our song–and start asking artists’ permission in general!”

Instead of choosing one of the misappropriated songs as my song of the day, I’m going with a song that McCain/Palin would never take. Everclear has released a new song, free to download on their website, and one listen and it’s clear which side of this election that they’re on:
