Woohoo. 750! Another milemarker has been reached and what a perfect time to mix two of my favorite things in one- Myth and Music. See, as educational and fun as the last post was, classical literature isn’t excatly my forte. I haven’t even read the Grapes of Wrath. But put a book about mythology in front of me and I’ll devour it from cover to cover. And I’m not just limited to just Greek mythology. Whether it be Norse, Chinese, Native American, Roman, Creole, it doesn’t matter, I’m fascinated by the stories that different societies have created to explain the ways of the world. And I’ve never taken a look at how myth has been coupled with music in history, so I think this should prove to be interesting. So, first step one is to find a myth to start researching. I think I will start off with a Greek classic- Pygmalion. Pygmalion is the story of a sculptor who falls madly in love with his creation. And that myth has been remade in various ways over the years. In terms of music, there’s Aerosmith’s video for “Hole in My Soul” which is a take on the myth. But even better known is the theme from an adaptation of the 80’s version of the myth- a movie where two young men try to find love by building their own. It’s a classic take on the myth:
