Slowly but surely the Roman empire has begun to grow, as the 10kdays look at history continues. In the 6th Century BC, the Roman Empire added an important addition, the Pontifex Maximus. The name means “The Great Bridge-builder” and it’s the top religious position within the empire. He was more than just the top priest though, he also held political power. His duties include running all the burials, controlling the calendar, serving over all marriages, made decisions on adoptions and consecrated all the temples. In current times, there’s a separation of church and state but back then, there was no separation. He was the church, he was the state.
