There was a time in which professional wrestling and music did not go together very well. It’s a valuable part of the presentation but it doesn’t always mean that it works well together. Back in the 80’s, your average wrestler came to the ring to some mundane set of guitar riffs. Take the Ultimate Warrior’s theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUl1TiYZ-fc. Drums and wankery. Bret Hart’s theme is a classic but again, guitar wank. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv0MD5t6O6k. And then we would get stuff like the Shawn Michaels theme aka “Sexy Boy”. Ugh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWDh5T3kQWU. Or how about Jeff Jarrett back in the day. He had a country singer gimmick and it was painful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVVIrM7zzKU

Nowadays things are changing. Back in the day, Rick Derringer was probably the most noteworthy person doing wrestling music. Now, you get bands handing over their music as they understand it’s a valuable form of exposure. Bands like Mutiny Within, Killswitch Engage, Motorhead, Rev Theory, Alter Bridge, and Papa Roach all have contributed their music to the WWE product. That’s quite a step up.

What inspired this post was the new theme song by the WWE Unified Tag Team Champions- Chris Jericho & the Big Show. Both men used to be very success singles wrestlers before joining together and becoming JeriShow, the tag team that is currently revitalizing tag team wrestling in the WWE. Just like JeriShow, their theme song is a mashup. Originally, it was a very badly done mashup of their individual theme songs. Great idea, bad execution. So, the WWE got the band Maylene and the Sons of Disaster to redo the mashup as an actual song. The results are phenomenal. It’s just what you want in a wrestling theme. It’s full of energy and crunch. Great stuff to get the crowd going.
